RIT Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024 Announced
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - RIT Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Jacqueline Nicholson announced the 2024 RIT Sports Hall of Fame induction class.
The inductees include Jerry Galway '22 (men's hockey), Matt Giannino '15 (men's cross country/track & field), Jamie Martinez '15 (women's soccer) and Sedera Zbranak '19 (women's swimming & diving).
The class will be inducted on Saturday, October 19, at the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton, in conjunction with RIT's Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend.
Jerry Galway '02 (Men's Hockey) Applied Arts and Sciences
One of the top defensemen in men's hockey program history, Jerry Galway enjoyed a standout career from 1997-'02, garnering three first-team All-America honors
The Mississauga, Ontario native finished with 164 points on 46 goals and 118 assists, and still ranks first in program history in assists by a defenseman, including six in a victory over Neumann in 2002.
With Galway on the roster, RIT posted a 98-11-10 record and made four NCAA Division III Tournaments, including a semifinal appearance in 1998-'99. The Tigers also won Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) titles in 1998-'99, 2000-'01 and 2001-'02. He missed the 1999-'00 season due to injury.
Matt Giannino '15 (Men's Cross Country/Track & Field) Mechanical Engineering Technology
One of the top distance runners in program history, Matt Giannino left RIT a four-time All-American while six of his marks remain program records today. He was also named the Liberty League Runner of the Year on six occasions, including a sweep of cross country, indoor and outdoor honors in 2014-'15. Additionally, Matt was Liberty League Athlete of the Week 23 times.
Giannino punctuated his cross country career with an All-American 35th-place finish at the 2014 NCAA Divison III Championships after winning the Atlantic Region Championships as well as his second-consecutive Liberty League Championship.
The Syracuse, N.Y. native ran to a pair of All-America finishes at the 2015 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, placing sixth in the 5,000 and seventh in the 3,000 while being named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.
He also anchored the RIT distance medley relay that placed an All-American seventh at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Giannino remains the program record holder in the indoor 800 (1:55.33), 3,000 (8:13.99), 5,000 (14:15.85) and the 4x800 (7:46.69) while still owning the top outdoor marks in the 1,500 (3:48.79) and the 5,000 (14:15.54).
Jamie Martinez '13 (Women's Soccer) New Media Design
Jamie Martinez was a defender on the women's soccer team from 2010-'13. The Holmdel, N.J. native was a three-year captain and was the second player in program history to earn All-America honors, garnering second-team accolades in 2013. She was a two-time College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District honoree and a two-time Liberty League All-Academic selection.
Martinez was a three-time League all-star, including back-to-back first-team honors in 2012 and 2013. She was the backbone of a team that allowed a program-low 14 goals in 2013 that stood as the program record until 2022. Martinez started all 75 games at RIT and was the 2013 Liberty League Co-Defender of the Year. Martinez helped lead RIT to its first two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2012 and 2013.
Martinez led RIT to three-straight Liberty League Tournament appearance from 2011-'13, advancing to the championship game in 2013.
Sedera Zbranak '19 (Women's Swimming & Diving) Media Arts & Technology, New Media Marketing
Sedera Zbranak was an All-American swimmer in a multitude of events from 2015-'19. The Austin, Texas native was RIT's Co-Senior Female Athlete of the Year in 2019, and held 13 school records upon graduation.
Zbranak earned two All-America honors, taking second in the 100 backstroke and 12th in the 100 butterfly at the 2019 NCAA Division III Championships. She earned First Team All-Liberty League accolades in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle and was a Second Team selection in the 200 backstroke. Zbranak was also part of four record-setting relays and was a Liberty League All-Academic selection three of her four seasons.
Zbranak won 74 individual races, including a career best 31 in 2019. She broke three program marks and was part of four record-setting relays at the 2016 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) Championships. She was RIT's first New York State Champion in seven years, capturing the 200 freestyle in 2017. As a first year, Zbranak won five individual events and was a Second Team All-Liberty League pick in the 100 and 200 backstrokes.
