Men's basketball beats Union, 74-71 in Liberty League Quarterfinal

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT junior forward Josiah Turner scored 19 points in the No. 4 Tigers 74-71 win over No. 5 Union in the Liberty League Quarterfinal, Tuesday.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Union's Luke McGarrity hit a three-pointer to give the Garnett Chargers an early 12-7 lead, and Jack Plesser hit a pair of free throws with 14:34 remaining in the opening half to extend the lead to 14-7.
  • Turner tied the game at 16-16 on his three-pointer with 12:23 to play.
  • Junior guard Chase Dickens made a pair of free throws to give RIT a 20-19 lead midway through the half and senior guard Matt Caggiano scored with 5:56 to play to give the Tigers a 29-24 lead.
  • Senior guard Mark Osime converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 4:20 to play to extend the Tigers lead to 34-29.
  • Senior forward Kenny Wilburn scored inside the final three minutes to give RIT a 38-32 lead.
  • Union scored the final six points of the half, including a layup from Plesser in the closing seconds to tie the score at 38-38 at the break.
  • Union's Tanner Tedesco capped off a 9-0 run to begin the second half with his bucket to give the Garnett Chargers a 49-38 lead.
  • First-year guard Brody Brown cut the Union lead to 51-44 on his three-pointer off an assist from Dickens.
  • Dufort gave Union a 13-point lead on his three-pointer with 10:02 remaining.
  • Brown scored with 6:59 to play to cut the deficit to 62-59, capping off a 10-0 run by the Tigers.
  • Plesser gave Union a 68-61 lead on his bucket with 5:37 to play.
  • Turner converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:02 remaining, tying the score at 70-70 on his free throw.
  • Caggiano gave the Tigers a 72-70 lead on his layup with 1:15 to play.
  • Plesser made 1-of-2 free throws inside the final minute to cut the RIT lead to 72-71, but Caggiano made two free throws with nine seconds remaining to make it a 74-71 final.

 
GAME NOTES

  • This is the first appearance for RIT in the Liberty League Tournament since the 2017-18 season.
  • RIT shot 24-of-61 from the floor, including seven three-pointers.
  • RIT scored 15 points off of turnovers and got 41 points from the bench.
  • Union held a slight 36-33 rebounding edge.
  • Caggiano finished with 18 points, Dickens tallied 10 points and Turner led the Tigers with nine rebounds.
