No. 3 Men's Lacrosse beats St. Lawrence 14-5 on Senior Day
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT senior Clifford Gaston scored six goals to lead the No. 3 Tigers to a 14-5 win over St. Lawrence on Senior Day, Saturday.
Graduate student Ian Dinga and senior Nate Senez each had a goal and two assists. Sophomore Erich Acton tallied a goal and added an assist and graduate student Seth Grottenthaler, seniors Michael Finneran and Sam Bennett, junior Chase Bruno and sophomore David Charney each scored a goal.
Fifth year Drew Leahy, senior Hunter FitzGibbons and sophomores Joe Holenstein and Sam Rosa each caused two turnovers. Sophomore Logan Fletcher had a career-high six ground balls. Graduate student Allyn French won 5-of-8 face offs. Junior Alex Zborowski made 15 saves and senior Connor Flanegan made one save.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Gaston scored 13 seconds into the game off an assist from Senez to give RIT the lead.
- Grottenthaler and Bruno scored back-to-back goals to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead and Gaston scored to extend RIT's lead to 4-0 with 7:53 remaining in the first quarter.
- Ethan Friedberg scored at the end of the opening quarter and Henry Crean scored with 5:45 to play in the second quarter to cut the Tiger's lead to 4-2.
- Gaston scored two straight goals, including one off an assist from Dinga with seven seconds remaining in the second to give RIT a 6-2 halftime lead.
- Senez scored off an assist from Dinga 40 seconds into the third quarter followed by a Finneran goal to increase RIT's lead to 8-2.
- Crean tallied his second goal of the game followed by a Daniel Mahoney goal with 1:17 to play in the third that cut RIT's lead to 8-4.
- Dinga scored off a feed from senior Eric Burbank with seven seconds remaining in the third to give RIT a 9-4 lead.
- Bobby Wells scored early in the fourth quarter to make it 9-5.
- Charney scored to make it 10-5 and Gaston tallied two straight goals to extend RIT's lead to 12-5.
- Acton scored with 4:33 remaining and Bennett scored with 3:25 to play to make it a 14-5 final.
GAME NOTES:
- RIT outshot St. Lawrence, 49-35
- The Tigers were 27-of-31 on clearing attempts
- RIT won 10-of-23 face offs and had 35 ground balls
- Gaston moves into second all-time in career scoring with 299 points.
- Zborowski improves 15-1 on the season
