Softball sweeps Oswego, 6-2, 3-2
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT Softball team swept a doubleheader with visiting Oswego, 6-2 and 3-2, Tuesday.
GAME 1 - RIT 6, OSWEGO 2
- Oswego limited the Tigers to one hit through the first four innings while building a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and fifth innings.
- RIT broke through with six hits to score all six of its runs during a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth. First-year Kate Carlone drew a walk before first-year Sylvia White followed with a double to left center. Sophomore Emma Merkley brought them both home with a single to the centerfield wall, before advancing to second on a single by first-year Carlianna Ewing. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before senior Bailey Kehl knocked a two-run double to center field for a 4-2 lead. First-year Anna Cavotta followed with a two-run shot over the right-center field fence for her first collegiate home run to complete the rally.
- Junior Jessica Majot threw a complete-game five hitter, striking out a career-high 13 batters, to improve to 7-4 this spring.
GAME 2 – RIT 3, OSWEGO 2
- Cavotta finished 3-for-4, including the walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh to complete RIT comeback win.
- Oswego scored an unearned run in the first and brought another run across in the third before the Tigers brought a run across in the fourth. Cavotta beat out a throw to first for and infield single before reaching second on a Laker throwing error. After advancing to third on a deep fly-out by senior Maddy Cook, Cavotta came home after the Oswego catcher mistakenly rolled the ball back to the pitcher's mound after what she thought was a third strike called during an at-bat by sophomore Maria Minemier.
- RIT tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run by Minemier down the left field line with two outs.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Merkley drew a lead-off walk before an infield single by pinch-hitter Kate Carlone and a walk by Kehl loaded the bases. Cavotta drove a pitch to the right-center field gap to plate Merkley for the deciding run.
- First-year Mackenzie Blair scattered six hits over seven innings to earn the complete-game win, striking out five batters while only walking two.
