Women's Volleyball defeats Fredonia, 3-0, falls to W&J, 3-0, at Allegheny Invite

MEADVILLE, Pa. - The RIT Women's Volleyball team split a pair of matches on the second day of the Allegheny Invitational, Saturday. The Tigers swept Fredonia, 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-22) to bounce back from a 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-18) setback to Washington & Jefferson.

Senior middle blocker Catherine Vento was named to the All-Tournament team.
 
RIT 3, FREDONIA 0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-22)

  • Vento totaled a team-high 10 kills, while graduate student libero Hailey Blixt added 14 digs. Graduate student setter Sydney Neff was credited with 26 assists and five service aces, while sophomore outside hitter Macie Jolliffe chipped in nine kills and a season-high six service aces.
  • Tied, 5-5, early in the first set, RIT scored five-straight points to kick off an 8-1 run and lead, 13-6. Fredonia responded with an 8-3 run to pull within two, 16-14, but RIT bounced back with a 5-1 surge for a 21-15 lead that proved insurmountable.
  • The teams played a back-and-forth second set before RIT broke a 12-12 tie with a 12-1 run, including four kills by Vento, to open a two-set lead.
  • RIT trailed, 8-7, in the third, but used a 9-1 run to build a 16-9 lead. The Tigers led by as many as seven down the stretch, including 23-16, en route to the sweep. 

WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 3, RIT 0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-18)

  • Neff totaled 25 assists and 14 digs while senior outside hitter Samantha Cox added 10 kills.
  • W&J opened an early 4-1 lead that ballooned to 17-9. RIT pulled within seven, 20-13, but allowed five-unanswered points to drop the first.
  • RIT scored four-consecutive points to knot the second, 7-7, and later used a 5-1 surge to build a 15-13 lead. W&J answered with five-straight points for an 18-15 lead, but the Tigers used a 4-1 run to knot the score, 19-19. RIT led, 23-22, but two-straight W&J points put the Tigers in a 24-23 hole. RIT tied the score on a W&J attack error, but W&J notched two points to close the second.
  • RIT opened a 10-7 third-set lead, but W&J notched five unanswered points to start a 13-4 run for a decisive 20-14 lead it would not relinquish.

RIT returns to Pennsylvania next weekend for four matches at the Grove City/Westminster Invitational, starting with a 2:00 p.m. matchup with Thiel and a 6:00 p.m. contest with Wooster on Friday (Sept. 20).
