Men's Hockey falls, 4-3, to visiting Colgate

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT first-year defenseman Tristan Allen scored his first collegiate goal and added an assist, but it was visiting Colgate earning a 4-3 victory, Saturday at the Gene Polisseni Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • RIT got on the board 13 seconds into a power-play following a Colgate holding penalty early in the first period. The Tigers cycled the puck around the point before Allen one-timed a feed by sophomore forward Tyler Fukakusa from the left faceoff circle into the top-left corner of the goal at 6:45 of the first.
  • Colgate responded 19 seconds later following a face-off to the right of the Tiger goal. RIT junior goaltender Trent Burnham saved a shot in the slot by the Raiders' Max Nagel, but Brett Chorske one-timed a rebound that deflected to the left faceoff circle, near post.
  • Colgate scored a power-play goal with 1:03 on the clock to carry a 2-1 lead into the second. Daniel Panetta send a pass below the goal line to Chorske in the left corner, before Chorske sent a return pass to the top of the left faceoff circle for a one-timer into the top left corner over Burnham's shoulder.  
  • RIT evened the score at 14:06 of the second with its second power play goal of the game following a Colgate cross check. Graduate student defenseman Dimitri Mikrogiannakis carried the puck into the zone and tipped a pass forward to junior forward Simon Isabelle in the right faceoff circle. Colgate goaltender Andrew Takacs saved Isabelle's initial backhand attempt from close range, but the puck trickled in front of the left post for a short tap-in by Isabelle with seven seconds left in the power play.  
  • Colgate retook the lead off the opening faceoff of the third period. Chorske won the draw back into the Raider zone that was collected by Reid Irwin. Irwin sent a pass into the neutral zone to Chorkse, who beat the Tiger defense back to deke a backhand past Burnham with 19:42 on the clock.
  • The Tigers retied the score 1:07 later. Senior forward Tanner Andrew caused a turnover on the forececk that junior forward Tyler Mahan took control of in the left faceoff circle. Mahan dropped a pass through the slot to Andrew in front of the right post for a finish over a diving Takacs.
  • Colgate retook the lead for good at the 5:10 mark. Ryan Sullivan skated the puck on goal from the right boards and put a shot on goal that was initially stopped by Burnham. Jack Brandt found the loose puck while standing in the crease and tipped a shot into the net. 

GAME NOTES

  • Burnham finished with 27 saves as Colgate finished with a 31-23 shot advantage.
  • Isabelle has scored a goal in three-straight game and leads the Tigers with five this season.
  • RIT finished the game 2-for-5 on the power play, scoring its first two extra-man tallies of the season on a season-high number of attempts. The Tigers entered the night with only nine power-play attempts through its first six games.
  • Colgate completed the weekend sweep after also winning Friday's opener, 5-4.
  • Junior defenseman Xavier Lapointe was credited with an assist on Allen's opening goal for his second-straight game with an assist.

RIT returns to Atlantic Hockey play with a midweek trip to Niagara on Wednesday (Oct. 30) for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff.
