Women's Lacrosse wins 16-15 at Stevenson
OWINGS MILLS, MD – RIT junior Zoe Heffernan recorded a career-high eight points to lead the Tigers to a 16-15 win over Stevenson, Wednesday.
Heffernan finished with four goals and four assists, senior Lily DePalma tallied four goals, and an assist and junior Morgan Nichter scored three goals. Junior Grace Validzic scored two goals and juniors Jenna Bovenzi and Adele Joines each tallied a goal and an assist.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stevenson's Kara Yarusso and Erin Steinberg scored early in the first quarter to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
- DePalma and Heffernan each scored twice in a four-goal Tigers run. DePalma's goal with 2:25 remaining in the first quarter gave RIT a 4-2 lead.
- Sophia Murray scored with 2:09 to play in the quarter to make it 4-3 followed by a goal from Nichter inside the final 45 seconds to give the Tigers a 5-3 lead after the first 15 minutes.
- Steinberg scored back-to-back goals to start the second quarter, tying the game at 5-5 on her free-position goal midway through the frame.
- Nichter and Jones had back-to-back tallies to give RIT a 7-5 lead.
- DePalma scored late in the period to give the Tigers an 8-7 halftime lead.
- The two teams combined for eight third-quarter goals.
- Yarusso and Isabelle VanEmburgh each scored early in the third quarter, taking a 9-8 lead on Yarusso's goal with 9:52 to play in the quarter.
- Heffernan and Nichter scored consecutive goals, giving RIT a 10-9 lead on Nichter's goal with 3:16 remaining.
- DePalma scored to give RIT an 11-10 lead and Bovenzi scored with 30 seconds to play in the third to make it 12-11, Tigers.
- RIT scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter taking a 14-11 lead on Heffernan's goal with 10:42 to play.
- Stevenson answered with a two-goal run cutting RIT's lead to 14-13 on VanEmburgh's goal with 9:10 remaining.
- Validzic scored to give the Tigers a 15-13 lead followed by a woman-up goal from junior Kate Trojan to give RIT a 16-13 lead with 5:58 to play.
- Stevenson scored two late goals to make it a 16-15 final.
GAME NOTES
- Stevenson outshot RIT, 35-234
- First year goalie Grace McDonald made eight saves in net and junior Ellie Ruddy made three saves to earn the win.
- Sophomore defender Katherine Killian won 10 draw controls, caused a turnover, and had a ground ball.
- RIT was 12-of-12 on clearing attempts and won 18-of-35 draw controls.
