No. 2 Men's Lacrosse wins 17-11 at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – RIT senior Ethan Harkins scored a career-high six goals to lead the No. 2 Tigers to a 17-11 win over Grove City, Saturday.
 
Harkins led RIT with seven points and senior attack Clifford Gaston tallied four goals and two assists. Senior attack Nate Senez had four assists and sophomore midfielder Nick DiLauro scored a career-high three goals.
 
Senior long-stick midfielder Axel Sanderson had three caused turnovers and five ground balls and graduate student midfielder Allyn French won seven face offs. Junior goalie Alex Zborowski made 13 saves.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • RIT led 6-4 after the first quarter. DiLauro and senior midfielder Michael Finneran scored back-to-back goals to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.
  • Sophomore midfielder David Charney scored with 8:35 remaining in the opening quarter to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
  • Grove City tallied two straight goals, tying the game at 3-3 on Stewart McCain's goal.
  • The Tigers ran off three straight goals taking a 6-3 lead on Charney's second goal of the quarter and Kobi Bui scored with 1:27 remaining in the opening frame to cut the Tiger's lead to 6-4.
  • RIT outscored the Wolverines 3-1 in the second quarter to lead 9-5 at halftime.
  • Grove City's Evan Curry scored early in the quarter to cut the RIT lead to 6-5.
  • Gaston scored two goals in a three-goal run by the Tigers. He scored with 5:12 to play in the half to give RIT an 8-5 lead and again with 2:50 remaining to extend the Tiger's lead to 9-5.
  • Zborowski made five of eight first half saves in the second quarter.
  • RIT scored six goals in the third quarter to lead 15-8 after 45 minutes.
  • The Tigers began the quarter with a four-goal run taking a 13-5 lead on Gaston's goal with 7:13 to play in the quarter.
  • Grove City tallied back-to-back goals cutting RIT's lead to 14-8 on McCain's goal 2:27 remaining.
  • DiLauro scored with seven seconds to play in the third to give RIT seven goal lead.
  • Luke Jayne scored early in the fourth quarter to cut RIT's lead to 14-9.
  • Harkins and Gaston scored back-to-back goals to extend the Tiger's lead to 17-9.
  • McCain and Bui scored late goals for the Wolverines to make it a 17-11 final.

 
GAME NOTES:

  • RIT outshot Grove City, 46-42.
  • The Tigers were 27-of-39 on clearing attempts
  • RIT had 28 ground balls to 30 for the Wolverines
  • Gaston moves into seventh in all-time scoring with 239 career points.
