Wrestling finishes tied for fifth at NCAA Mideastern Regional Championships
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT junior Mike Glynn III finished second at 149 lb. to help the Tigers to a tie for fifth at the NCAA Division III Mideastern Wrestling Regional Championships. Glynn qualifies for the NCAA Division III Championships for the first time in his career.
Friday, Glynn defeated Mahmoud Esa with a fall at 2:48 in his opening bout. He beat Shane Strausser with an 11-0 major decision in the second round and took down Dominick Vinci with a 19-3 technical fall in the quarterfinals.
Saturday, No. 6 seed Glynn defeated No. 2 Matthew Beyer with an 11-10 overtime win. Glynn took down Beyer in the closing seconds of the third period to tie the match and was awarded the winning point on a referees decision in overtime.
First-year Marek Bush finished fourth at 157 lb. Friday, he beat Hollis Berry in his opening match with an 18-1 technical fall. The No. 6 seed lost his next match, but came back to defeat Kyle Klein with an 18-3 technical fall in the consolation round. Saturday, Bush defeated Landen Smith with a fall at 4:21 before beating No. 4 Ryan Datz with a fall at 5:28 in the consolation semifinals. Bush lost to Jake Hoffman in the third-place match.
Friday, No. 6 seed Bryson Vaughn defeated Andy Beras with a 17-0 technical fall in his first match. He went on to beat Culley Bellino with a fall at 1:43 in the quarterfinals. Saturday, Vaughn lost to No. 2 Alex Samson in the semifinals and to No. 8 Andrew Loniewski in the consolation semifinals. He came to beat Bellino with a 16-1 technical fall in the fifth-place match.
Junior Lee Rubin placed fifth at 125 lb. Friday, the No. 6 seed won his opening bout with an 17-1 technical fall over Uriah Morris at 125 lb. He lost his next match , but defeated Mason Drew, 10-9 in the consolation round. Rubin defeated Franco Mazza with a 10-1 major decision in Saturday's consolation quarterfinals before a loss to No. 1 Matt Griffin in the consolation semifinals. Rubin came back to beat Liam Bullock, 14-3 in the fifth-place match.
Senior Ben Dougherty finished seventh at 174 lb. Friday, the No. 6 seed defeated Gavin McLaughlin with a 15-0 technical fall in his opening match. After a loss, Dougherty came back to beat Colton Gietler with a 12-1 major decision in the consolation round. Saturday, Dougherty lost to No. 7 Jeremiah Oakes in the consolation quarterfinals, but defeated No. 8 Kenny Sauer, 1-0 in the seventh-place match.
Glynn will compete at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships beginning on Friday (March 15) in La Crosse, WI.
