Softball falls twice to RPI, 9-0 (6 inn.), 8-4

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT Softball team lost both ends of a Liberty League doubleheader to visiting RPI, falling, 9-0 (6 inn.) and 8-4, Saturday.
 
GAME 1 – RPI 9, RIT 0 (6 inn.)

  • Hitless through two innings, RPI plated five runs in the third inning, including a three-run home run by Callista Adorno.
  • The Engineers put the game away with four runs in the sixth inning while limiting RIT to three hits overall. 

GAME 2 – RPI 8, RIT 4

  • Senior Maddy Cook finished 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI while first-year Kate Carlone plated a run during game-two.
  • First-year Carlianna Ewing led off the second with a single up the middle and advanced to second after senior Kristin Hino reach on a bunt single. Senior Bailey Kehl followed with a single to left to plate Ewing while a Engineer error allowed Hino and Kehl to advance an extra base. Cook brought Hino home with a sacrifice fly to right to put RIT on top, 2-0.
  • RPI bounced back with a four runs in the fourth, including a two-run home run by Adorno, for a 4-2 lead.
  • The Engineers brought another run across in the top of the fourth, but RIT got two back in the bottom of the inning on a lead-off home run to centerfield by Cook, along with a sacrifice fly by Carlone that plated sophomore Maria Minemier to make it a one-run game, 5-4.
  • RPI brought two unearned runs across in the sixth to build a 7-4 lead and tacked on another in the seventh en route to the sweep.
  • RIT first-year Mackenzie Blair took the complete game loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out four. 

GAME NOTES
Cook moved into a tie for third place in program history with her 90th career RBI as well as sole possession of fifth place with her ninth career home run. Notching her 50th hit of the season, her 34 RBI are also the fourth-highest single season total in program history.

RIT is scheduled to host Oswego on Tuesday (Apr. 22) for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
