Softball splits with Skidmore on Senior Day; wins 9-8 (9 inn.), falls 12-2 (5 inn.)

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT Softball team split a Liberty League doubleheader this afternoon opposite visiting Skidmore, walking off a nine-inning, 9-8 victory in the opener before falling, 12-2 (5 inn.).
 
GAME 1 – RIT 9, SKIDMORE 8

  • Senior Maddy Cook finished 3-for-5, including a walk-off double, and scored two runs while seniors Erin Ozminkowski and Bailey Kehl were each 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI in the come-back win.
  • RIT scored two runs in the first inning on a two-out double by Ozminkowski and another in the second inning on a RBI triple by first-year Carlianna Ewing for a 3-0 lead.
  • Skidmore knotted the game in the third on a three-run home run by Jessica Nachamie and took a 5-3 lead in the fifth on a two-run shot by Nachamie.
  • RIT got one back in the bottom of the sixth after Kate Carlone drew a lead-off walk. First-year Anna Cavotta came in to pinch run and eventually came home on a bases-loaded ground-out by first-year Mackenzie Blair.
  • After Skidmore retook a two-run lead, 6-4, in the top of the seventh, the Tigers responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Cook led off with an infield single before Ozminkowski doubled her to third. Senior Kristin Hino plated Cook with an infield ground-out before Carlone brought Ozminkowski home from third with a base hit to centerfield.
  • Skidmore scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, including a RBI single by Nachamie, to retake an 8-6 lead.
  • Carlone drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the ninth before first-year Sylvia White reached on a Thoroughbred fielding error. Kehl later brought both runners home with a double down the left field line before Cook doubled to left field to plate Kehl with the winning run.
  • Junior Jessica Majot improved to 6-3 on the year after earning the complete-game win, striking out a career-high 10 batters without surrendering a walk.
  • Cook, Hino, Kehl, Ozminkowski and senior Lexi Pieri were honored after the game in a Senior Day ceremony. 

GAME 2 – SKIDMORE 12, RIT 2 (5 inn.)

  • Skidmore jumped out to an 11-0 lead after three innings, including a six-run second.
  • RIT plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run single by Cavotta.
  • Skidmore retook a 10-run lead with a run in the top of the fourth before holding the Tigers scoreless the rest of the way to earn the mercy-rule win.
  • Cavotta finished 2-for-3 as RIT was limited to six hits.

RIT is scheduled to host RPI on Saturday (Apr. 19) for a doubleheader slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
