Women's Volleyball sweeps Vassar, 3-0, on Senior Day
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT Women's Volleyball team defeated visiting Vassar, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-20), in Liberty League action, Saturday, at Clark Gymasium.
POSTSEASON UPDATE
The Tigers (17-11, 4-4 Liberty League) qualified for the Liberty League Tournament for the sixth-straight season, clinching the fifth seed and a quarterfinal matchup at fourth-seeded Union on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vassar opened the first set with an 11-9 lead, but RIT scored five-straight points to start an 11-2 run and build a 20-13 lead. The Brewers later got as close as five, 23-18, but RIT notched back-to-back points to take the first set.
- RIT jumped out to a 9-2, second-set, lead before Vassar scored a 4-1 run to pull within four, 10-6. Later trailing, 16-10, Vassar pulled within two, 17-15, following a 5-1 run. The Tigers responded with a 5-2 run for a 22-17 lead, before the Brewers scored three-straight to get back within two, 22-20. The
- Tigers put the set away winning three of the final four points, including a pair of kills by senior outside Samantha Cox and the clinching point on a service ace by graduate student libero Hailey Blixt.
- Vassar opened an 11-6 lead to start the third and later led, 16-9. However, RIT scored five-consecutive points during an 11-3 run to take a 20-19 lead. The Brewers retied the match, 20-20, but the Tigers finished the match with five unanswered points to put away the victory.
MATCH NOTES
- Senior outside hitter Catherine Vento totaled a team-high nine kills on .438 attacking, while sophomore outside hitter Macie Jolliffe added eight kills.Vento also led the way with five assisted blocks.
- Graduate student setter Sydney Neff added 27 assists and 11 digs for her 14th double-double this season.
- Blixt finished the match with a team-high 12 digs while also logging three service aces to move into fourth place in program history with 232 to date.
- Senior outside hitter Samantha Cox logged six kills on .429 swinging along with three assisted blocks.
- Blixt, Cox, Neff and Vento were all honored in a pre-match Senior Day ceremony.
WHAT'S NEXT
RIT hosts Oswego on Tuesday (Nov. 5) at 6:00 p.m. in its final home match of the season, before traveling to St. John Fisher (5:00 p.m.) and Brockport (10:00 a.m.) next Friday and Saturday (Nov. 8-9), respectively, to close the regular season.
