Men's Hockey earns 4-1 victory at Colgate to complete two-game sweep
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The RIT Men's Hockey team earned a 4-1 victory at Colgate, Saturday, to complete a two-game sweep of the Raiders while winning its fifth-consecutive game.
Colgate opened the scoring midway through the first but RIT answered less than two minutes later on sophomore defenseman Ryan Williams' first tally in a Tiger uniform. First-year forward Evan Konyen scored a power-play goal midway through the second for what proved to be the game-winner before senior forwards Tyler Mahan and Austin Brimmer tacked on empty-net goals in the final three minutes of regulation to seal the weekend.
Sophomore goaltender Jakub Krbecek stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced to improve to 5-1-0 this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate opened the scoring at 10:47 of the first. Luke Malboeuf sent a long outlet pass down the right wing through the neutral zone to Bobby Metz, who took a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle. Krbecek made the initial pad save, but the puck rebounded to Ryan Sullivan in the slot for a short finish inside an open left post.
RIT tied the score less than two minutes later after Mahan sent a pass from behind the Colgate goal to Williams at the left point for a long shot that scored through a crowded crease at 12:36.

RIT took a 2-1 lead at 9:56 of the second following a Colgate cross checking penalty. First-year forward Zach Wigle carried the puck down the left boards and snuck a cross through the slot to Brimmer charging down the right wing. Brimmer one-touched a pass to Konyen in the slot for a one-timer inside a bare left post.

COACH THOMAS SAID
"We really had to dig in and find different ways to create. Obviously, getting the empty net goals makes it look like we were maybe a little bit in control of that game, but we were never in control. Colgate just kept coming at us, but we kept responding. It's a huge win. It is obviously really tough to sweep any weekend, never mind on the road against a non-conference opponent.
"I think it makes us believe a little bit more than maybe we did. And not that we haven't as a team, but sometimes you're learning a little bit about yourself and how you need to play and what your identity needs to be and how you need to change who you are.
"You need different guys to step up at different times and different guys sometimes need to sacrifice a little bit of ego to do what's best for the team. Philippe Jacques won two huge faceoffs for us at the end and embodies a lot about what we're all about here. There's the expectation is you've got to step up for our team when you're called upon. We had some guys do that in big time ways tonight.
"We talked about the type of response Colgate was going to have. We knew they were going to be super physical and engaged. Obviously, there was a lot more action towards both nets than there was the night before. And I think that was just the type of challenge that you have to deal with. You have to deal with a team being a little bit better than they were the night before, then you've got to elevate your game. I thought our guys did a really good job of that.
"It's not going to go perfectly. We've got to find a way to elevate our game, dig in at different points, find different ways to score and do different things. And I thought a lot of guys did a tremendous job finding a way to help us do that."
