Six Things You Need to Know About the 2025 Women's Tennis Team
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT women's tennis team resumes its 2024-25 season on Sunday (Feb. 9) against Binghamton Here are the top six things you need to know about the Tigers heading into the season.
Last Season
The Tigers finished with seven wins last season in head-to-head matches, including two wins in Liberty League play.
Sophomore Kira Kronenberg led RIT with 19 wins in singles in 2023-24, finishing the season with 14 wins in doubles competition. That success led her to top 40 national and top 20 regional ranking as well as Liberty League Rookie of the Year honors.
"To have a player like Kira in the early part of her career along with a talented group of first years to add depth will be a huge catalyst for our success," said Linhart. "We have talent at every spot in the lineup and the results this fall in both dual matches and tournaments shows the potential we have to springboard ourselves to the top half of the conference."
Back in Fall
The Tigers competed at two tournaments and two dual matches in the fall, going to 2-0 in dual matches with wins over Hartwick and Geneseo.
First year Maya McDaniel went 4-1 in singles competition in the fall, while Kronenberg went 3-1. Kronenberg and first year Emily Greb went 5-2 in doubles and McDaniel and classamate Melanie Saborio teamed up to go 4-1. McDaniel and Kronenberg were semifinalist in the "A" flight singles at the Mary Hosking Invitational. Kronenberg and Greb made the "A" flight doubles final at the Mary Hosking Invitational and the quarterfinals at the ITA Northeast Regional. McDaniel and Saborio lost in the semifinals of the ITA Northeast Regional.
Singles
Kronenberg recorded 19 wins in doubles last season, including 14 wins at first singles. Junior Anika Galkiewicz posted five wins last season, while Murray recorded five wins. Murray, Greb and Saborio each won twice in the fall.
"To have McDaniel, who has shown herself to be a top player in the conference, pushing Kira will really help us grow as a young team," said Linhart. "Greb and Saborio pushes the veterans down the lineup to make us deeper and more experienced than we have been in those spots."
Doubles
Kronenberg and Greb teamed up and posted a 4-2 record in doubles in the fall, while Saborio and McDaniel went 4-1 in doubles competition.
"The catalyst for our energy in each match is doubles," said Linhart. "To have two teams that are interchangeable, but different allows us a lot of flexibility and makes us a formidable team to beat"
